Retail Jobs for Kids

By , About.com Guide

Is your child considering working a retail job to earn extra money? Retail companies may hire kids as young as the age of 14. Retail companies are always hiring, especially in the summer.

Pros:

  • Work is relaxed: Unlike fast food jobs, retail work is typically slower paced. Your child may have an easier time working in a more relaxed atmosphere.

  • Schedules are flexible: It is easier to request a date off of work if the child is hired with flexible hours. Retail jobs frequently hire employees with a flexible schedule.

  • Pay is competitive: Most companies only hire kids for minimum wage. However, a job in retail could result in a slightly higher pay rate with frequent raises and the opportunity to earn commissions or bonuses.

  • Discounts on merchandise: One of the greatest benefits of working in retail is the employee discounts. Many companies are very generous with the discounts they give their employees.

  • May lead to full-time management: Kids who keep their job in retail long enough may get promoted. This can lead to a management position and a full time schedule.

  • Can lead to future employment: When your child works in the retail industry, he may be able to network with other people. Networking with a lot of people could lead to better employment with other retail companies in the future.

Cons:

  • May impact academics: If your child works during the school year, his or her grades may be impacted. The demand to work at night is common with retail jobs.

  • Could impact social life: Most retail jobs require their young employees to work on the weekends. Your child will most likely have some time off on the weekends, but they may have to work at least one day each weekend.

  • May not have a lot of hours: Because most retail jobs operate on flexible schedules, there may be frequent weeks where your child has little or no hours. If your child absolutely needs money, this may be a bad industry to work in.

  • Work may be a little difficult: Your child will have to learn skills like cash register operation, money handling, inventory taking, and other tasks related to retail. Some people learn these skills quickly while others do not.

What Kids Learn About Money:

  • Raises: Your child will learn that hard work can lead to promotions and raises. Kids working in retail will learn what is expected of them and be taught the necessary skills to perform the job. If they perform above those standards, they may earn raises.

  • Punctuality: Jobs in retail are strict on the punctuality of their employees. If your child is frequently late, it may result in disciplinary action taken by his employers and a loss of hours.

  • Investing: Many retail companies offer stock programs to those who qualify. This can teach your child the importance of saving and investing.
