How to Teach Your Kids About Taxes

By , About.com Guide

One of the toughest things to teach kids about money, is the concept of taxes. Start early and help them understand how taxes work, they'll avoid confusion and frustration later on.
Start Early:
If you give your children an allowance, it might be a good practice to take a little out for "taxes." Explain that everyone has to chip in to help pay for sidewalks and roads. You can always put the money into a savings account for kids for them to spend later.
Explain the Benefits:
Teach your children that taxes help fund schools, roads, parks and other things that they are familiar with. They'll understand the concept more if you can tie it to physical objects for them.
Withholding:
Before your children begin their first job, explain to them that their employer will withhold taxes from their paycheck. It will ease the disappointment when they receive their first check. Give them a folder to save their paycheck stubs for tax time.
Tax Returns:
Once your children need to file a tax return, have them help, by gathering their paychecks and adding up how much withholding they had. Show them where you enter the numbers. It will probably be over their head, but even an introduction is a great start.
