What was your first job?

My first job was helping a home based business that sold cat towels.

How old were you?

16

How much did you earn?

$6/hr.

How did you get your first job?

My high school had a job posting board that I would check frequently. I needed something that paid a decent wage ($6/hr was a lot back then!) and came across the listing of working at someone's home. The process was simple. I applied through the school and was then contacted by the employer. The job was very easy but unfortunately only lasted for a brief period.

What did you love (or hate) about your first job?

The job was easy but repetitious. I basically folded these cat towels and placed them in a plastic display bag. I then stapled the cardboard header so that they could be hung on display in a store. That was it. The job wasn't challenging but it did bring in some extra money.

Advice

  • First seek out places that you think you may want to work. One of the jobs I enjoyed the most in college was working at GNC. I loved working out so it was a natural fit to enjoy working there.

Job boards are a great way to find jobs for kids. Checking your local job boards at school, just as Jeff did, could be a great source for finding your first job.
